Reading out loud

We are learning to read familiar poems out loud. We are trying to read with fluency and expression. As we get more confident, we can pay attention to the author's punctuation to help our reading sound more interesting.

"I can sound out words I don't know when I read out loud. I can read loudly so everyone can hear" said Noah

Wonderful writing

At writing time we are learning to experiment with new types of punctuation. We are starting to read our stories back and check we have fullstops and capital letters in the correct places.

"I can do smaller writing now. I can write a lot. I like writing a lot. "

Measuring Fun

During Maths Week we did Pirate Maths! One of the activities was to learn to use different non-standard units for measuring with. We were learning to have an accurate starting and finishing point when we measured.

"We are making a pirate ship with string and chalk. I am good at maths."

I'm on Phonics Fire!

Phonics lessons are a very important part of our Writing programme.
As I get more confident I try tricker things. In this photo I listened to a dictated sentence and then tried to write down what I heard and put in the correct punctuation.

"I need to do finger spaces in all of my sentence next time."

Contractions

I am learning to recognise contractions. I know that contractions have apostrophes to replace missing letters.

" A contraction is two words joined together and one or two or three pop out and a mark is left to say that the letters are not there."  said Noah

Matariki

Our classroom celebrated Matariki, which is the Maori New Year. We came to school in our pyjamas and had a yummy breakfast together! It is great to share time with our whanau.

"It was so, so much fun. My Dad made all of the milo with lots of marshmallows. I think we should have breakfast at school again. My Mum got all the food and I helped her."

Tread Lightly Caravan visit

The Tread lightly Caravan visit was teaching us that the environment is everything around us in nature and that the environment is really important for us to live (trees for oxygen, water to drink, plants for food etc.) so we need to look after it.

"I remembered, only rain goes down the drain!"
